A Sad Voyage

On this day in 1952, Prince Edward, the Duke of Windsor, boarded the RMS Queen Mary in New York in order to attend his brother's funeral in England. George VI, who became king when Edward abdicated the throne to marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, died in his sleep of a coronary thrombosis. He had been battling lung cancer at the time. For the duke, it was not only a sad occasion, but a lonely one. The Duchess of Windsor would remain behind in New York.

He is pictured here aboard the Queen Mary, which he and his wife referred to as their ship, wearing a black arm band as a symbol of mourning.
